City FC website issues

January 25th, 2010

The City FC website was hacked in late December.  Due to this the website was taken down and everything was re-installed. While most of the content was readily available from backed ups, the news section was not.  Due to this most of 2009 content is currently missing.  Articles are being re-posted as they are located. We apologize for any inconvenience.

City FC coach moves to USMA at West Point

January 9th, 2010

Hello City FC Friends and Family,

It is with great excitement as well as sadness that we announce that our own Dan Driscoll has accepted the Assistant Coach and Goalkeeping Coach position with the United States Military Academy at West Point.

While we are sad to see Dan move on to upstate New York we know that professionally Dan is well on his way to a successful career as a college coach. As a result of this move and due to NCAA rules, Dan will no longer be serving as a coach for our teams. Please join us in wishing him all the best in his new endeavor.

Given Dan’s large role in City FC, we want to assure our players, parents and volunteers that our activities will continue and that Dan’s responsibilities are being covered by others within the club. For any issues please email info@cityfc.org and we will be sure to put you in touch with the right person.

The spring season is just around the corner so we look forward to seeing you all back on the pitch soon!

City FC debuts at the MD Futsal State Cup

January 3rd, 2010

City FC’s U17 futsal team traveled to Maryland to compete in the MD Futsal State Cup, sponsored by the US Futsal Federation (USFF), on January 3, 2010. This was the first futsal tournament opportunity for the U17 team, and served as a valuable learning experience for the team as they lost all four games. According to Roy Kelly, one of the City FC coaches, “despite the losses, the players demonstrated improvement with each game.” The highlight of their tournament came in their last match where they held group champions, Magic Santos, scoreless for the first 10 minutes, displaying that they are capable of holding their own against one of the best teams around. The players are already moving forward, and have begun talking amongst themselves about how they plan to return next year to surprise some of the same teams that beat them this year, says Kelly. Applying the lessons they learned at the MD Futsal State Cup to their advantage, the players are currently competitively playing on different teams in the DC Parks and Recreation Winter futsal League.

City FC girls team participate in Freedom run clinic with Young Rising Stars FC (Pakistan)

April 12th, 2009

On Saturday, April 11, the newly-formed City Football Club (“City FC”) girls’ team participated in a unique cultural exchange made possible by DC Stoddert Soccer, the Washington Freedom, the U.S. State Department and the Maryland SoccerPlex.

The City F.C. team, comprised of female high school students enrolled at D.C. public schools, joined a team of young women from Pakistan at the Maryland SoccerPlex for a clinic led by Washington Freedom coaches Clyde Watson and Chris Ward. Freedom player Parrissa Eyorokon also provided instruction during the clinic. Following the clinic, City FC coaches Roy Kelly and Dan Driscoll mixed up the City FC and Pakistani players – who were in D.C. as part of a unique State Departement-hosted soccer delegation touring the area – for a 9v9 scrimmage on one of the Maryland SoccerPlex’s excellent turf fields.

Following the scrimmage, the players and their coaches walked over to the stadium field, where they watched the Washington Freedom’s WPS home opener – a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Red Stars. Several City FC players also joined the Pakistani delegation after the match for dinner at a local restaurant.

City FC would like to thank the Washington Freedom for the excellent clinic, Beth Fine and the U.S. State Department for the opportunity to meet and play with the delegation of female soccer players from Pakistan, the Maryland SoccerPlex for providing access to its excellent fields, and DC Stoddert Soccer for arranging free tickets for the young women of City FC to watch the Freedom first-ever WPS match at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

The event was a wonderful example of the common ground that the Beautiful Game provides for cultural exchanges like this one. All involved were so pleased the Pakistani delegation is participating in today’s City FC girls’ practice.

Again, City F.C.’s coaching staff currently offers FREE weight-training support at the gym twice each week (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:15 pm at the Northwest branch near Wilson High School and Tenleytown metro). The George Washington University soccer field is located at the GW-Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex at 2100 Foxhall Road, NW in Washington, D.C. Directions to the facility are available at: http://gwsports.cstv.com/student-ath-ctr/gewa-vernon-facility-directions.html

City F.C. announces partnership with DC Stoddert

December 16th, 2008

On the first anniversary of its founding, City Football Club (“City F.C.”) is proud to announce that it is merging with DC Stoddert Soccer League, Inc.

City F.C. is joining DC Stoddert Soccer, the city's largest provider of youth soccer opportunities.City F.C. is joining DC Stoddert Soccer, the city’s premier provider of youth soccer opportunities.

With more than 30 years’ experience providing organized teams and supervised games for local girls and boys, DC Stoddert is the Washington area’s premier youth soccer club. DC Stoddert is widely-recognized as the leading provider of youth soccer opportunities in the District, currently reaching 5,000 kids playing on 400 teams.

City F.C.’s brings to DC Stoddert City F.C.’s success involving children from every ward of the District in competitive soccer with first-rate coaching, combined with academic tutoring and help with applying to college.

City F.C. organized its first soccer clinic in November 2007 and one year later, the program is thriving with participation by student-athletes from areas of the District where that have been under-represented in club soccer. City F.C.’s under-19 boys team just completed its second season in the MSI “Classic” league, and a girls’ program is kicking off this month. On the academic front, the program’s mentors and tutors are actively working with seniors in the final stretch of the college application process, and a workshop was recently held at the Maret School in Washington. Shelley Brody, Maret’s college counselor, worked one-on-one with City F.C.’s students to discuss their college opportunities.

City F.C.’s partnership with DC Stoddert enables the group to support’s DC Stoddert’s efforts to give children in every ward of the District a chance to play for a competitive soccer team and receive first-rate coaching.

As an official program within DC Stoddert, City F.C. will also be able to fundraise under the umbrella of DC Stoddert’s 501 (3) C Status. Funds raised will go directly towards City F.C.’s programming, and as an official subsidiary of DC Stoddert, City F.C. will now acquire non-profit status so that donations to support its programs will be tax-exempt.

“We’re extremely excited about this partnership,” says City F.C. co-founder Dan Driscoll, who started the program in November 2007 with boyhood teammate Roy Kelly. “For the past year, we’ve operated as a loose entity of volunteers carrying out a common mission. Now, as we head into the new year, City F.C. will be part of DC Stoddert Soccer – the same club that gave me my first uniform 20 years ago. With non-profit status, City F.C. will now be able to attract significant donations, which will enhance our capacity to provide the best possible environment for our student-athletes to excel in both sports and academics.”

DC Stoddert’s in-coming Board Chair David Sarley echoes Driscoll’s enthusiasm: “We are very excited at DC Stoddert to take City F.C. under our wing, as not only do they help expand the reach of soccer opportunities across the city, but they add a new dimension to the club in diversifying our volunteer base to tap younger professionals in the community who have a love for the game and energy and ideas to launch new programs for D.C. youth. In fact, City F.C. allow us to add the first-ever former Stoddert player in Dan Driscoll to the club’s Board.”

City F.C.’s partnership with DC Stoddert Soccer became official following unanimous approval by DC Stoddert’s board of directors on Dec. 10, at which Driscoll was also elected to DC Stoddert’s Board of Directors as City F.C’s voting member.

“I am very fortunate to coach the amazing kids of this city,” says Driscoll, who — in addition to his work with City F.C. — coaches the School Without Walls boys’ varsity team with Kelly, as well as Stoddert travel and rec teams. “To now serve on Stoddert’s Board is a great honor and an important responsibility, and I am looking forward to supporting DC Stoddert and City F.C. in this capacity.”
