An idea several months in the making became a reality as the members of City Football Club (“City F.C.”) took to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 28, wearing custom-made uniforms.

Designed by City F.C. co-founder Dan Driscoll, the uniforms were manufactured by Rush Sports (www.RushSports.us), a Miami-based company specializing in custom designs of athletic uniforms.

With a pair of red stripes and three white stars running diagonally across the chest, the all-black uniforms salute the flag of Washington, D.C. – home of City F.C. – and the black, red and white color scheme pays homage to D.C.’s most-famous soccer team, D.C. United of Major League Soccer. D.C. United (www.DCUnited.com) has been a strong supporter of City F.C., providing the club with equipment and free tickets to home games at RFK Stadium.

The City F.C. logo – also designed by Driscoll – features the silhouette of the D.C. map over a soccer ball, forming a diamond shape. Three red stars over a pair of red stripes run across the diamond, another reference to City F.C.’s District heritage.

The right sleeve of the jersey features the initials “KM,” a tribute to Kyle Maginnis. Maginnis was a D.C.-native who was a college soccer teammate of Driscoll’s. The idea for a high-quality youth soccer program serving all wards of the District was one Maginnis often discussed with Driscoll during their training sessions in college. Maginnis died of a brain tumor in 2003 at age 20.

The left sleeve features the logo of CT Industries (www.CTIndustries.com), proud supporter of City F.C. CT Industries makes of custom molded all-rubber, fabric-to-rubber, rubber-to-PTFE and rubber-to-steel bonded products for all markets, including military and defense, automotive, oil and gas, and general industries. CT Industries, Inc. continues to set new standards for quality, value and delivery of its products, and the 23-year-old company’s family culture was recently recognized by the Houston Business Journal’s Best Places to Work list.

In the lower-back region of the jersey, City F.C. proudly features the logo of Universal Sports (www.UniversalSports.com). Universal Sports serves as the preeminent multiplatform destination for Olympic-related and lifestyle sports programming available on television and online. Universal Sports is a 24-hour television channel available in 30 million television households in markets including Washington DC (Comcast channel 207) as well as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, Hartford, New Haven, Las Vegas and Reno.

City F.C. was established in 2007 to provide District youth with a program combining competitive soccer and first-rate mentorship and college preparation.  City F.C. is organized exclusively for charitable purposes as an educational non-profit.  Its objective is to bring together the City’s youth for educational and recreational opportunities, including but not limited to soccer.

On Thursday, October 16, City Football Club’s student-athletes and volunteers were treated by D.C. United to a free group outing to watch D.C. United’s final Major League Soccer (MLS) 2008 regular season home game at RFK Stadium.

Twenty members of City F.C. and five volunteers enjoyed D.C. United’s exciting come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution, with United’s two second-half goals occurring just a few yards away from the group’s front-row seats.

The outing was provided by Kicks for Kids, a program administered by United for D.C., the charitable arm of D.C. United. United for D.C. believes that by exposing youth to a live, professional soccer match, these kids will witness the results of hard work, dedication, commitment, and teamwork.  City F.C.’s group outing on Oct. 16 was enabled by a generous ticket donation to Kicks for Kids by the Upper Marlboro, Maryland -office of Contemporary Services Corporation (CSC)- a provider of “peer group” security and crowd management services.

The Kicks for Kids program also enabled City F.C. to attend another D.C. United home game earlier this season, as well as the 2007 MLS Cup Final last November. That outing was enabled by the generosity of CT Industries –a City F.C. uniform sponsor and maker of engineered molded rubber plastics – and CT Industries later sent the club a soccer ball signed by every member of the 2007 MLS Champion Houston Dynamo.

City F.C.’s players hail from every ward of the District and several different nations. Kicks for Kids has given our players a tremendous gift by enabling all of them to watch Major League Soccer’s most storied club go head-to-head with North America’s best professional soccer teams. Thanks to the Kicks for Kids outings, City F.C. players have watched some of the world’s best players from just a few yards away, encouraging the young City F.C. athletes to improve their own skills in the hopes that they can become better players in their own right.

City F.C.’s player Kemda “Eto’o” Gilbert Boli was so inspired that he attended the D.C. United Academy program tryouts in August after City F.C.’s coaches recommended he do so. That player earned an invitation to play with the D.C. United Academy’s under-18 program, an accomplishment in which Kicks for Kids played an important part.

City F.C. improved to a 2-1 record in this fall’s season with a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Pools Pressure on Sunday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, MD.

Donning City F.C.’s spanking new uniforms — which the team received shortly before its third game — Elijah Umek scored the first goal of his City F.C. career to pull the team even, and Robert Hirt and Ikechukwu “Ek” Umez-Eronini added goals of their own to propel the team to victory.

Strong performances were had by all, notably new goalkeeper Michael Edmondson — who was forced to make three critical saves from close range to keep his team ahead — and defenders Robi Carozza and John Doherty, whose goal line volley saved what many thought to be a certain goal. Midfield playmaker “Eto’o” Kemda Gilbert Boli continued to impress with his ball skill and delivery, with midfield partner Oliver Samuel-Jakubos providing Boli with several through-ball options.

City F.C.’s next match is Sunday, October 5, against the Internationals in Germantown, where City F.C. hopes to build on its recent successes and earn its third win of the season.
